Abraham Maslow Biography

Abraham Maslow

Abraham Harold Maslow (April 1, 1908 – June 8, 1970) was a psychologist who studied positive human qualities and the lives of exemplary people. In 1954, Maslow created the Hierarchy of Human Needs and expressed his theories in his book, Motivation and Personality. While Maslow’s Pyramid remains a popular framework for human motivation among business management leaders, high psychological instruction prefers attachment theory as a model for understanding human behavior.

Self-Actualization – A person’s motivation to reach his or her full potential. As shown in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a person’s basic needs must be met before self-actualization can be achieved. Self-actualized people shared these traits:

  • Efficient perceptions of reality.
  • Comfortable acceptance of self, others, nature.
  • Spontaneity.
  • Task centering.
  • Autonomy.
  • Continued freshness of appreciation.
  • Fellowship with humanity.
  • Profound interpersonal relationships.
  • Comfort with solitude.
  • Non-hostile sense of humor.
  • Peak experiences.

Thanks a million Tim. I have used this for my assignment and it has most certainly bought some colour to what can only be described as a rather dull assignment.

  2. This was very helpful. I had written an article about it and I used one of your diagrams. I acknowledged your site to direct them to your content. Thank you for sharing this and may I say you have the best illustration since it’s brief, concise and en pointe! Keep it up!

    Hello,
We love this pyramid and feels it exactly explains what we discuss about Technology as it pertains to Senior Living. We would like to get approval to use this image to print on reusable bags that we would give out for free to CCRC representatives. Please let me know how we may go about this. Feel free to email me.
    Thank you
    Barrie

this is great impression! If high-levelled human beings look down and low-levelled human beings look up, their eyes will definitely see the same thing – the need of unique human being!

  7. Hi Tim, thank so much for the illustrated hierarchy of needs chart – really easy to understand, and perfect for explaining to students.

I don’t suppose you’ve done one of the DMM of attachment theory?! Now that would be a real bonus!!

    1. Tim van de Vall

      Hi Kim,

You’re welcome! No, I don’t have one of attachment theory, unfortunately.

  10. This illustration helps me to understand well when I am doing my assignment! I added it on my assignment as an appendix. It is brilliant! Thanks to Tim!!:)

  11. Thanks for an awesome diagram. I have read/seen an expanded hierarchy that includes Cognitive and Aesthetic needs between Exteem and Self-Acutalization. Have you ever included these in a drawing? As a teacher, it is really interesting to see where learning (cognitive needs) fall in the pyramid. Thanks again for your amazing drawing(s).

    1. Tim van de Vall

No, I haven’t included those in any drawing, but I’ll read up on it. Maybe I could incorporate the Cognitive and Aesthetic needs in a larger diagram. Thanks for your comments!

      1. Hey I love the Maslow’s chart it was so colorful and easy to understand I was wondering if you had on one Erickson’s stages of developments.
