Fraction strips, also known as fraction bars, are an effective learning tool to teach kids about fractions. With a tangible representation of fraction values, children can begin to see how fractions can be added and subtracted, multiplied, and divided.
Below you will find a free set of printable fraction strips.
The first two fraction bar printables are in color. The second set is in black and white. The first page has labeled fraction strips. The second page contains blank fraction strips.
Printable Fraction Strips
Print out one of these sheets for each of your students. Let them cut out the strips and put them in a pile. Call out a fraction, such as 1/3. Have the children see how many different ways they can create that value with various fraction bars. (Example: 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/6).
Once your students are beginning to understand how fractions work, present them with this blank fraction strips worksheet. Label some, but not all of the fraction strips. See if they can figure out what fractions the blank bar represent, based on their length in relation to the labeled strips.
Fraction Strips – Black and White
Here are the black and white versions of the fraction bars printable worksheets. Your kids may enjoy coloring them. If you want these fraction bars to last, glue them onto cardboard and laminate them.
When trying to download, the image becomes a page full of gibberish!! The other fraction strips link took me to JC Penny.
